TSA PreCheck: is it worth it?

Updated: Apr 12, 2023

You have been planning and waiting for your vacation to start. You finally make it to the airport, you get your bags checked in and you head to security. The dreaded line could be 5 minutes, it could be 45 mins. Depending on the time of your flight and how long that line is you could have to leave an hour or more earlier than you think. But to the left you see the TSA PreCheck line and their wait is drastically shorter. Their line moves faster, and hey they don’t have to take their shoes off!! How do I get in that line you ask?

Head over to: https://www.tsa.gov/precheck The application process takes about 10 minutes to complete online. You will have to go in and have fingerprints done, but the scheduling for that is pretty simple and takes less than 20 minutes. The application is $85, and your TSA PreCheck enrollment status is good for five years. The best part is if your traveling with your kids 12 and under you can take them in the line with you. This is very handy when you have to take the kids yourself on a trip.

💳 It gets better! Many travel credit cards (hello Capital One- I love you) offer statement credits that can cover the cost of your TSA PreCheck application. If you plan to fly even once in the next 5 years with kids I can’t recommend this enough! It just makes the airport… less stressful, and physically easier. TSA PreCheck offers a number of benefits, including: ✈️ An expedited airport security screening process
✈️ The comfort of not having to remove shoes, belts or light jackets before clearing airport security, and
✈️ The ability to leave laptops and TSA-approved liquids and gels in your carry on luggage

I am so glad we did it, I haven't used it with my children yet, but even by myself it has been a major help in reducing anxiety.
